In 1982, several Abilene businessmen became aware of the needs at the Abilene Boys Ranch (now known as Ben Richey Boys Ranch & Family Program). Since most of these “Good Ole Boys” were chili cookers, they decided that the best way to raise money for the Ranch would be to have a chili cookoff. The Chili Super Bowl was born!
The Directors and Volunteers are proud to help the Ranch by sponsoring the Chili Super Bowl annually on Labor Day weekend in beautiful Buffalo Gap, TX. Up to 75 chili, brisket, chicken, ribs, beans, and dessert cooking teams from across Texas come to compete for cash prizes of over $7,100, all donated by local merchants.
Over 1,000 people come out each year to enjoy food booths, raffles, a live auction, music, and a dance on Saturday night. The Dyess We Care Team, Taylor County EMS, and other volunteers cook homemade chili in the World’s Largest Chili Pot. Thanks to our generous sponsors, cooks, volunteers, and attendees, the Chili Super Bowl Board is proud to have donated over $2,000,000 to the Ranch over 42 years!
